“Peanut butter and jelly” Green Smoothie

Image

Green smoothies are a morning staple for us Lana Hawaii girls.  Our day, literally, does not start without one.  That being said, it’s important for us to keep our smoothies interesting and mix it up! Whether its using different greens or changing up the liquid base, we vowed to never have the same green smoothie twice in the same week!

We also love this smoothie because the ingredients are things that you most likely already have on hand!

Image

Notice the “peanut butter and jelly” part in quotations.  That’s because there’s neither peanut butter nor jelly in this smoothie.  Just fresh spinach, strawberries, a banana, and some almond milk…all ready to be blended up into a cup of morning sunshine. And here’s a secret—you don’t need a fancy, super expensive blender for a perfect green smoothie (we use an Oster blender we got at target). Just make sure to blend the greens and liquid base first then add the other ingredients a cup at a time.

And believe it or not, this really does taste like a peanut butter and jelly smoothie! The combination of the almond milk and banana with the slight tang of the strawberries just reminds me of PB&J, but minus the calories!

For an extra protein boost, we love topping our smoothies off with chia seeds! We use Mila, but it is on the expensive side so any kind will do!

You’re a cup away from a perfect morning.

  2. Blend for about 30 seconds or until fully blended

Quote of the Day

Quote of the Day

Memories are what makes us who we are, however if you dwell on the past, the time you have at the moment will slip away. With that being said, if you look too far out into the future, you miss what’s happening around at the present moment. It’s easy to think about all the things you want to do “later on in life”. I think about it all the time, but what I began to realize recently is that my “dreams” aren’t going to just come to me. You have to take on the present moment and do something with it. If you’ve been wishing to go on an Europe trip someday, why not this summer? Why not start saving now? If you want to lose 5 pounds, why not start going to the gym today? This realization is part of the reason why we started this blog. If we want to create a yoga brand someday, why not start by sharing our passion with the world.

Anyway, keep this in mind and really take it in. Spend time with the people you love and make you a better person. Take a deep breathe and enjoy the place you are at right now. If you are not at a place you want to be, realize that things will  change and pay attention to the positive. If you keep your mind on the present, everything in the future will fall into place.

Love,

Lana Hawaii

5 Regrets of the Dying

5 Regrets of the Dying

Reflections07-640x430

This is an article written by Bonnie Ware, a nurse that worked in palliative care for many years. Many of her patients were those who had gone home to die. During the last three to twelves week of their life, Bonnie Ware took care of them and shared many things. In this article Bonnie passes on some of the most common regrets that these dying people had.

1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.

This was the most common regret of all. When people realise that their life is almost over and look back clearly on it, it is easy to see how many dreams have gone unfulfilled. Most people had not honoured even a half of their dreams and had to die knowing that it was due to choices they had made, or not made.

It is very important to try and honour at least some of your dreams along the way. From the moment that you lose your health, it is too late. Health brings a freedom very few realise, until they no longer have it.

2. I wish I didn’t work so hard.

This came from every male patient that I nursed. They missed their children’s youth and their partner’s companionship. Women also spoke of this regret. But as most were from an older generation, many of the female patients had not been breadwinners. All of the men I nursed deeply regretted spending so much of their lives on the treadmill of a work existence.

By simplifying your lifestyle and making conscious choices along the way, it is possible to not need the income that you think you do. And by creating more space in your life, you become happier and more open to new opportunities, ones more suited to your new lifestyle.

3. I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.

Many people suppressed their feelings in order to keep peace with others. As a result, they settled for a mediocre existence and never became who they were truly capable of becoming. Many developed illnesses relating to the bitterness and resentment they carried as a result.

We cannot control the reactions of others. However, although people may initially react when you change the way you are by speaking honestly, in the end it raises the relationship to a whole new and healthier level. Either that or it releases the unhealthy relationship from your life. Either way, you win.

4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.

Often they would not truly realise the full benefits of old friends until their dying weeks and it was not always possible to track them down. Many had become so caught up in their own lives that they had let golden friendships slip by over the years. There were many deep regrets about not giving friendships the time and effort that they deserved. Everyone misses their friends when they are dying.

It is common for anyone in a busy lifestyle to let friendships slip. But when you are faced with your approaching death, the physical details of life fall away. People do want to get their financial affairs in order if possible. But it is not money or status that holds the true importance for them. They want to get things in order more for the benefit of those they love. Usually though, they are too ill and weary to ever manage this task. It is all comes down to love and relationships in the end. That is all that remains in the final weeks, love and relationships.

5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.

This is a surprisingly common one. Many did not realise until the end that happiness is a choice. They had stayed stuck in old patterns and habits. The so-called ‘comfort’ of familiarity overflowed into their emotions, as well as their physical lives. Fear of change had them pretending to others, and to their selves, that they were content. When deep within, they longed to laugh properly and have silliness in their life again.

When you are on your deathbed, what others think of you is a long way from your mind. How wonderful to be able to let go and smile again, long before you are dying.

Life is a choice. It is YOUR life. Choose consciously, choose wisely, choose honestly. Choose happiness.

Citi Bike Cycling Classes in NYC

“Indoor cycling is just too expensive, it’s not available to everybody. I want the homeless people of New York to have the opportunity to have sick bodies.”

Fabrizio Goldstein, a comedian, takes advantage of the new Citi Bikes in New York City and conducts cycling classes for homeless people.

Citi Bikes are public bikes that are parked all around New York City to raise awareness of the new experiences one can acquire through bike sharing. Although money is required to rent the bikes, people can sit on the docked bikes and pedal backwards for a free cycling workout. This video shows a segment of Fabrizio Goldstein’s cycling class, as he motivates homeless people with his words and enthusiasm.

According to the Daily News, although the activity started as a joke, Goldstein reveals that it has “kind of turned into a real thing” and would like to keep it going. “I got a dozen emails today from people saying, ‘If you put up a schedule, I will come’.”

Good for you Fabrizio Goldstein, good for you.
This is a very funny and clever video. Enjoy!

Open-Faced Green Eggs and Turkey

Open-faced-green-egg-turkey-recipe

There’s nothing quite like sleeping in and making brunch….especially guilt-free, super nutritious brunch.

Not only is this open-faced sandwich yummy and healthy, but it’s fast and easy, using ingredients that you most likely already have! Now, I would like to take a moment and talk about whole-wheat english muffins. If you haven’t tried these yet, on your next grocery shopping trip grab a pack of these…you can thank us later.  These are the perfect whole wheat alternative, where you get all the health benefits without sacrificing taste and texture, plus they last for like ever!

Open-faced-green-turkey-ingredients

Back to the recipe, so everything you see is all you need, in addition to a little bit of EVOO.  I like to use pesto that is sold in the refrigerated section by the cheeses, and brown organic eggs are a must.

Quote of the day

Quote of the day

Keep this in mind in whatever you do. I applied this quote today during one of my favorite past times. Eating. (I had a meatball pizza from CO. Best pizza in NYC). It’s not about how much you can eat and how full you will be at the end of your meal. It’s about the experience you get from tasting your food. The combination of the fresh ingredients, the texture, the flavor. Believe me, keep this in mind the next time you grab a bite to eat. It’ll be the best ________ you’ve ever had!
